Anton Chekhov’s 1904 tragicomedy is widely considered a classic of twentieth-century theatre. An aristocratic Russian landowning family must come to terms with the imminent auction of their estate—including their prize-winning cherry orchard. With serfdom having been abolished in 1861, the Ranevskys are both nostalgic for and haunted by a past defined by strict social hierarchy. As Russia and the world undergo massive political and technological changes, they struggle to find their place in the new order. Chekhov’s play has remained relevant because of his incisive portrayal of human nature, but it is perhaps especially compelling in this moment, as we, too, contend with significant political and technological change.
