Cluster Memories from Fort Bast

Inspirations from the artist’s feline family

Dana Frostick Artist Statement

Many nouns can represent a group of cats: clowder, clutter, glaring, pounce, and cluster. My cluster consists of dozens of cats that have lived with me during my adult life, mostly at my long-time home known as “Fort Bast.” Named in honor of the goddess of cats, Bastet, my home provides a secure fenced yard around it to keep random dogs from easily entering. The paintings shown in “Cluster Memories from Fort Bast,” depict portraits and narrative stories of a number of the cats who’ve made up my feline family through the years, all overlaying an abstract base inspired by my long term series, “Elaborate Doodles.”

I use a Sharpie marker with acrylics so that I cannot erase or remove the lines I create. Like life itself, we cannot remove our past, we can only build on our previous actions and move forward. I begin by providing a background of color and texture with acrylic paint that is typically shared between multiple paintings by pressing them together face to face. Once the backgrounds are dry, I use Sharpie to define the edges of each painting’s story. I continue by tracing the connections of random interactions between shapes and colors that were created in the background. Each line is like a reflection of the choices we make, the paths we walk and the timing of events in our lives. The completed background provides the setting or framework for my selection and placement of each cat in the paintings.

My use of cat imagery is representative of the families we choose and illustrates how closely the emotions and behaviors of cats are in relation to those of humans. Through my individual creative lens, my artwork uncovers what is universally shared among all creatures. These examples of the interconnectedness of all Earthlings serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving all forms of life on our planet.
